Since I wrote this piece, I found plenty of things that I missed and that really need to be added, perhaps one of these days.


Les boules de chocolats au Rhum et les marquises aux marrons de Fluckiger...Les tourtes aux milles feuilles de Pastroudis...Les pâtes d'amandes de Délices and their special fruit cake covered with chocolate, les bûches aux marrons....les pâtes d'amandes d'Athinéos on forme de champignons et recouverts de chocolat.

Les ice-creams, cloclo et topi et le pain d'Espagne d'Alexandrie. (ed: now that I realize the error of my ways, I know that pandispania is not one word) When some young men in Alexandria were casting their nets at la Gazelle to try to catch the attention of the girls.....others found richer catch at l'Amirette...No time to be timid speak your mind...

Here are few teasers: in the department of ice-cream, les trois petits cochons, Joséphine Baker, kaymac, cassatas, sfiogliatela. argentins, and profitérols...... please help fill in the blank.

Let's get serious here, somebody mentioned the Brazilian Coffee Shop, (ed: I still crave the café glacé, and plan to have one when I return) the best muffins to be had, Lappas best cappuccino, the Indian Tea House, best iced tea, Le khoshaf or granita du Sans Souci.....Having a sugar cane, or mango juice, Oh! yeah!!!, after escaping the hot summer nights on a felucca ride on the Nile, or ending a perfect evening, entertained by the Skyrockets and their signature song "The Big Bamboo" at the very popular Shagara night club, dancing to the latest craze of the time, rock and roll, twist, cha cha cha, meringue, hully gully, bossa nova, Watusi, the Charleston which made a short comeback....The unforgettable dining experience, always excellent good floor show and dancing at the Belvedere du Hilton (still is), with the magnificent view of Cairo at night and lights flickering over the Nile. The quaint night clubs of the Shepherds, Kassed Kheir, Mena House (now Oberoi), Pyramid Stereo Club, Omar Khayam, Atlas, Goha, Fontana, Mokattam.....fill in the blanks.

You, dashing young men, showering your dates with necklaces of Fol and Yasmin on your way to a party, boîte de nuit, on a moonlight horse back ride from the Pyramids to la Citée des Tentes, or the longer route to Sakkarah...

A late snack at the Semiramis Night and Day, anyone for a batarekh sandwich (ed: even industrial strength Clorox could net get rid of that nasty odor; my father loved the stuff!) at the Kursaal, or a bastourma and egg sandwich from Garo. I see you there at the Excelsior munching on a cheese sandwich and a cold sweet juicy watermelon (never knew why the order is placed in Greek? Ena carpuzi)....

For our brothers and sisters in the north, Les Alexandrins. San Stefano, San Giovanni, Windsor, Athinéos, Chatby, Selsella aka Club de Chasse, Monseigneur, Yacht club....was the place to be after a good day at the beach, are any of these names familiar, Stanley, Rouchdy, Agami, Ma'amoura, Montazah, Sidi Bishr, Miami, Glymonopoulos..... come on don't be timid. I see you wrestling with a two-inch thick roast beef sandwich, (ed: the best sandwich I remember was the "gigot" at a restaurant next to the Strand near the Gare de Ramleh) prepared by the very generous Tony, to spite the owner of Lourantos, he confided in me one day. For fish, a leg up on the Cairenes, no serious challenge, only two entries Pandellis and Andrea to contend with, Aboukir's Zephirion, les crevettes du Santa Lucia (mama mia), Mex and now Adoura....

It's ok we had more kabbab restaurants in Cairo, than their Ikhlas, Nassar and Taverna...It was once said to me, you haven't lived until you tasted the Caprice de Chef at the Elite, or Chez Gaby's pizza marinara ex-Il Ritrovo. You too had your partisanship when it came to the Pâtes d'Amandes, Kraften, Boulles aux chocolat and Brioches between Délices, Athinéos, Baudrot, Pastroudis, Fluckiger and the Trianon.....My second domicile in Egypt was Groppi, where I spent quite a bit of my time there.

As a child I developed very strong ties...adulating the very friendly personnel....I was invited to sample anything in sight many times over (including their famous chocolat Japonais)....I was among the lucky ones growing in the "sweet corridor" Loque, Lappas, Thomas, Koueider, L'Automatic, L'Américaine....The pressing question du jour, and without starting a civil war, who had the best falafels...speak your mind now.....

We had many things in common, like the very popular last row on the balcony of a movie theater, very conspicuous, particularly when the featured movie was so so and playing to an empty salle. (ed: my most vivid memories of the cinema in Alexandria was my sister's hand over my eyes every time there was a romantic moment, or heaven forbid! a kiss) After a while the faces get familiar, I know some of you out there. I leave the Ras el Bar, Marsa Matrouh, Gharda'a, Ein Sokhna, Lac Karoun, Baltim and fishing trips chapters to someone else....please step in; we need you pronto....

An afternoon green Tea? La Maison des Arts, of course the place get lively at night. Frequented by artists and writers. Milo was running this several hundred-year old house near the Citadel. It had several arabesque salons, with a beautiful water fountain in the court yard. Special private oriental parties were held for for distinguished visiting heads of state and dignitaries.


There was also the Café Fishawi, famous for its late evening gathering, especially during the month of Ramadan. Add to the cabarets and boîtes de nuit list: Le Perroguet, Kit Kat, Tabarin, Cabanon, La Pergola...

Let's widen our scope and include other interests. Your participation and input would be appreciated.


Entertainment: Were you a member of the Ciné-club Lumière, hosted by the Père Zohrab every Friday afternoon at the Cinéma Métro?. Speaking of cinema was it just me, or any one else experienced these inexplicable behaviors, like in an almost empty theater, someone comes and just sit in front of you, or two friends sitting together but not on the same row, in a version of an instant replay, one recounting the plot while they are watching the movie, and explaining to him his often incongruous interpretation of the plot. And how about the kiss, bringing some hilarious comments and sound effects from the spectators.


Now, I'm really going to need your help and feedback: Tito Gobi, by reading the critics of the time, it was said that Rossini composed the Barber of Seville, for a voice like him in mind, indeed when he was singing the popular area "Figaro li Figaro la...regardless of the speed, every word could be heard clearly. Who can forget the powerful voice of Begniamino Gigli and other great one from the Scala de Milan, who entertained us every winter at the Cairo Opera House, and their participation at the Christmas Midnight mass a St. Joseph Church (the basement on Sundays converted into a movie theater) singing Ave Maria.


Was it you sitting next to me at the Ewart Memorial Hall, humming the catchy songs of the Merry Widow. Hélas no front seat available for the French Cancan troupe, also appearing at the same theater, Porgy and Bess. Help what am I missing here?.


The Comedy Française is in town, that means, Racine, Molière, Corneille....How many times did you watch L'avare, Le Misanthrope, Cyrano de Bergerac...(ed: never watched, but read them all) Help help. For the music and ballet lovers. The Vienna Philharmonic Symphony under the baton of Furtwangler (performing at the Cinéma Rivoli). The Bolshoi, Mossaevitch, Marquis de Cuevas, the International Festival of Folkloric Ballets, taking place in 1956 at the Opera House....fill in the blanks for me.

Was it you laughing the loudest at the Rihani theater, at the unforgettable performances, by these great, unique, talented artists, Mary Mounib, Mimi Chakib, the only one of a kind Adel Khairy, Abbas Fares.....jump in please. Who remembers the talented transvestite Coccinelle? (ed: omigod, I'm in shock! Coccinelle was a transvestite? I'm ruined for life.) L'Auberge des Pyramides, where Dalida performed as an amateur and was discovered there, the rest is history? The Covent Garden? The Ciro? The pianist Ricardo Credi? The inaugural of the Nile Hilton with a concert by Charles Aznavour? (ed: I'm not a fan, he whines too much) Louis Armstrong concert at the Cinéma Kasr el Nil? Also performing there, the famous national acrobats from the republic of China? (ed: though I didn't know them at the time, I am now intimately familiar with a few hundred of these acrobats, as I work on their American visas) The marionettes (aragoz) theatre? And many other events...it's up to you now to jump in.


How about the social clubs: Libanais, Club Shalom, Socony Club, Turf Club...help


On the air (Radio): Concert des Auditeurs, the English version At your request, hosted by Gamal Fares, son of the artist Abbas Fares. Le coin des enfants "Toto manges ta soupe, je ne peux pas, Toto manges...et pourquoi tu ne peux pas,- parce que je n'ai pas de cuillère", and the Arabic version Baba sharo.


The Musica Viva Conservatoire de Musique? Were you a participant in the lectures at L'Alliance Française, Dante Alleghieri, Goethe Institute, or... The frozen whale that was on display for few weeks at Midan Tahrir. The wax museum. The open air Coffee shops: Catching the latest gossip, getting the scoop on the real news before even printed. Nursing a tamarind, orgeat or carcade and in the comfort of our seats do some shopping, like on an invisible conveyor belt, the peddlers passing by, offering their wares, from toiletries, fruits, clothing, food, to.... name it. It surely beats pushing a cart and waiting in line. All that in a surround sound of backgammon players banging the boards, (ed: this expression leaves me wondering, what about you?) in a medley of salty comments.


In the field of sports: If I say Zouzi Harrari, Army and blackouts, does it mean anything to you, (ed: nope, nada, niente, rien du tout) but of course it does. Remember the Basketball finals Macabee vs. Army, and if at the last remaining seconds, our boys were ahead, a sudden loss of electricity occurred. But not if the same happened between Army/Propatria or the Keravnos.


Who remembers in 1962, the bragging of the Ahly to the Zamalek fans, We are the world champions??? (ed: let me tell you friend what I remember most about 1962 was puking almost daily on the Esperia while crossing the Mediterranean from Alex to Marseilles). We beat the Benefica 3 - 2, who just won the European title by beating the Real Madrid, boy how things got quieter when somebody remarked that Minyah beat the Ahly that same year. Were you there rooting for my opponent, in a ping pong game at the Mutuelle? Or laughing at my missing an easy shot at the Billiard Palace, over the cinema Rivoli, second home to many young actors, Omar Cherif, Rouchdy Abaza etc. etc.


Who remembers, the king of the English Channel crossings, the best swimmer of all time, M. Abd el Rehim. The long distance competition was once held in Cairo, the current was an excruciating obstacle. By the way he used to keep in shape at the piscine du Committé. You remember the piscines?. National, Guezireh, Tewfikieh Tennis Club, Club de la Shell, Le club de Chasse, Socony, la Compagnie des Eaux, Mena House, Club de la Kom Ombo, Heliolido...help.(ed: if you had my mother's opinion on piscines, you would not be allowed to go in, lest you catch something tantamount to death, or the equivalent of the Ebola virus)


Witness every early summers, the changing of skin colors from white to red. Remember the famous tennis player Miroslav Drobny, made his home at the National Club. Emile Zapotec the marathon runner giving us a taste of his abilities in an exhibition run in Cairo. The Grand Prix of Cairo. The wrestlers from France, making all the front pages "L'homme Gorille", a hairy giant man, I remember something like his breakfast consisted of a dozen eggs and...a few steaks for lunch...


Your participation would be great, even school anecdotes...


I didn't forget you Gamblers: I felt your pain fighting the heavy traffic on the road to the Casino in Inchass. Easier access when the action moved to Mokattam. Remember the Club Royal de Chasse at Dokki? In Alexandria the Selselah on the Port Est, and in winter time at Moharam Bey? The four race track Guezireh, Héliopolis in winter time, Smouha and Sporting in the summer.


How many happy faces on the train de mer, (ed: I am sad to say I never had the opportunity to board a train de mer, or de terre for that matter) leaving for Alexandria, on the weekend, to attend the Sport of Kings. The return trip had a somber atmosphere, which was certainly different from when we started out. Then there was no official announcer for the race, we had to rely on the commentaries of some confused spectator with powerful binoculars " the lightweights are leading the pack...after passing the finish line, by relying on his comments, we were still confused , as to the finish order...

Maybe we crossed path at La Potinière skating rink. Do you remember a very handsome young boy, beautiful complexion, with half a container of brilliantine Yardley (ed: Yardley was one of the very few things the English did right; if only their political strategies had smelled as nice) on his dark hair, always holding to the rail, as if to keep it from falling. That was not me. I was the daredevil (ed: nah, they said the same about me, and I'm a girl!) with blistered knees and bloody elbows, defying gravity, by unsuccessfully doing the triple pirouette in the air and always landing on my you know what, in sync with the ever popular song Amado Mio, playing in the background.


Always same greetings by my Mom, again, what happened to you this time?


A little addition to the Cinéma Strand, there was nearby a place that made fetira to die for. Across the street, Simmonds, a little sandwich store with homemade pastries, best early in the week. Across the street from the cinema Rio at Bal el Louk, there was York, mega ice-cream stick, fierce competition between shirt and mouth. At the corner, just exiting la Gare de Bab el Louk, at the right hand corner, according to the owner, the best Sahlab in the world. Very convenient after a bike ride in Meadi.


How about the salted and sweet peanuts? (ed: you mean the soudani?)


I didn't forget you my crafty Old Friends: Yes, you at the Mouski and Hamzaoui,(Zane'et el Setat in Alexandria) and elsewhere. There was the frustrating and impossible way, and the right way of the BAKSHEESH, who can turn the dreaded visit of an auditor from the Internal Revenue, into a very pleasant social après midi of coffee, tea, munching on zalabia aka loukoumadis, while talking about mutual friends, like the ones just visited last week, and more important, do you know so and so, I'm headed there next week.


There was some niceties among the brotherhood of taxpayers, and a code of honor observed at all time, the uniform bouche en bouche tariff....Jack, you don't know me but you owe me two cases of Stellas (beer), guess who's coming to visit you next Tuesday at 4 O'clock... that should give you plenty of time to put your sweets in order.


Need a document? Don't go about it the hard way. Just go to the Coffee shop
adjacent to the administration. When the attentive waiter comes to take your order, Coca-Cola and a birth certificate, what's peculiar about these establishments, you pay your tip before even getting your order.


Your military exemption? Don't wait in the barracks for days, and have your head shaved before getting your walking papers. While you can have refreshments in the comfort of the salle d'attente, making new acquaintances. In my case, I met two really older friends, what are you doing here??? I'm here for some relaxation...and went downhill from there.


Having trouble finding a parking place? A few well invested piasters , allows you to leave your car anywhere, while taking care of your errands. Speaking of parking, you remember the helpful "Monady", back back back till you hit another car and then followed by the warning stop, stop.

Strolling the streets
Excellent exercise, and a kind of checking on one's 5 senses. The rules are very simple, to join the piétons "country club", hook -up with few friends. We see 2 pranksters, looking toward the sky, and in an instant, surrounded by a crowd... I see nothing... how about you?. Passing by the Bamboo, shaking hand with Benito, the gregarious half of the two colossus at the entrance, the other one, Bruno, kind of shy keeping to himself, constantly combing his hair.... what's happening B ? ...Today the traffic is kind of light...Do me a favor, if you see??? tell him to get in touch with me (kind of voice-mail), Ciao B, take care. Contrary to the rumor, they were free standing, and not part of the foundation..


Passing Bacchus's Den!!!Société Viticole et Vinicole's outlet store, displaying their array of the fine Gianaclis wines...Back-up guys need something from Babik...Close to him, Tomvaco, you remember, the chocolate covered dates, preserve almond stuffed dates and Blackcurrants (griottes or wechna) in cans....Smelling the aromas of fruits, vanilla, coming from the Paradis des Fruits, a milk shake took care of the palate...At Emad el Din street, we can hear from a distance, the human advertisement standing on a stool, pointing a finger, and from the top of his lungs Boss Boss Boss..Passing another crowd, some with their hand shading their eyes...see nothing....


We reach our destination, the Continental's piano bar, they used to keep our leftover trays of hors-d'oeuvres, from the night before(honest to God)....I must apologize, don't remember the name of the person who mentioned Cinema Femina and the serials or episodes, sorry brother, we shared the same emotions, sitting on the edge of our seat, watching Fu Manchu, Dr. Zarcov, or...always left with the hero blown up in the air, to find the week after, that he got out of his coma, (ed: still doing it today) wiped the dust off his jacket, made sure that his hat is still on his head, looking for a parachute, find a hidden door in the cigar-box-like contraption, and jumped to safety. To find himself 20 minutes later in the same predicament. Thanks for reminding us. Is this familiar to you?

Arriving late at the railway station, got your ticket, big crowd at the platform, oh! oh! facing the prospect of traveling sitting on your suitcase, the whistle announcing the departure, and only a handful climb on board, and while the train pulls from the station, the ones left behind in choir "ma teta'ouch el gawabet" (don't forget to write), some of these vacationers were going to spend one week. Of course that was the pre-email age.

منذ كتبت هذا المقال ، وجدت الكثير من الأمور التي فقدت والتي هي فعلا بحاجة إلى أن تضاف ، ولعل واحدة من هذه الأيام.


كرات الشوكولاته مع الروم والستائر من كستناء Fluckiger... وفطائر ميلا Pastroudis يترك... والمسرات من المارزيبان وكعكة فاكهة تلك الخاصة المغطاة الشوكولاته ، كستناء سجلات.... يتم تشكيل عجينة اللوز الفطر Athinéos ومغطى بالشوكولا.

الجليد ، والكريمات ، وcloclo توبي والخبز من اسبانيا الى الاسكندرية. (إد : والآن وأنا أدرك هذا الخطأ في طرقي ، وأنا أعلم أن ليس pandispania كلمة واحدة) عند بعض الشبان في الاسكندرية ان صافي تلك المدلى بها في غزال في محاولة للقبض على اهتمام الفتيات..... الآخرين العثور على أكثر ثراء من الصيد Amirette الوقت... لا يمكن لخجول الكلام عقلك...

وإليك بعض "ألعاب : في قسم من الآيس كريم والخنازير الثلاثة الصغيرة ، جوزفين بيكر ، kaymac ، النقض ، sfiogliatela. الأرجنتين ، و...... profiteroles الرجاء المساعدة في ملء الفراغ.

دعنا خطيرة هنا ، شخص ما ذكر فإن مقهى البرازيلية ، (الطبعة : اتوق لا يزال القهوة المثلجة ، وخطة جديدة واحدة دوري الدرجة الاولى الايطالي عندما أعود) أفضل الكعك لقد يكون أفضل Lappas كابتشينو ، والشاي الهندي في البيت ، وأفضل شاي مثلج ، وgranita khoshaf الذهبي للSouci..... بلا وجود قصب السكر وعصير المانجو الذهب ، أوه نعم! بعد فراره من ليالي الصيف الحارة نحن ركوب فلوكه على النيل ، أو تنتهي ليلة كاملة ، مطلقا من قبل وصولها ، وأغنية "التوقيع والخيزران الكبير" في ملهى ليلي شاجارى شعبية جدا ، والرقص لآخر جنون من الوقت ، الروك اندرول ، تطور ، تشا تشا تشا ، مرنغ ، المجرى Hully ، بوسا نوفا ، وWatusi ، وتشارلستون الأمر الذي جعل عودة قصيرة.... وتجربة تناول الطعام لا تنسى ، دائما ممتازة وتظهر الكلمة الطيبة والرقص في بلفيدير هيلتون (لا يزال) ، وذلك بهدف رائع من القاهرة في الليل والأضواء الخفقان على النيل. النوادي الليلية غريبة من الرعاة ، خير Kassed ، مينا هاوس (الآن أوبروي) ، الهرم ستيريو نادي عمر الخيام ، أطلس ، جحا ، فونتانا ، المقطم..... ملء الفراغات.

فمن أنت ، الإسراع الشبان ، والاستحمام مع التواريخ الخاصة بك من قلادات وجنون ياسمين في طريق عودتك الى طرف وملهى ، الحصان ضوء القمر رحلة العودة من الاهرامات بالنسبة للمدينة من الخيام ، أو على طول الطريق المؤدي إلى سقارة...

وجبة خفيفة في وقت متأخر من الليل والنهار سميراميس ، يمكن لأي شخص لbatarekh شطيرة (إد : قوة صناعية حتى كلوروكس "أحب والدي تخلص من رائحة مقرفة أن صافي ، والاشياء!) وفي Kursaal والذهب والبيض شطيرة من غارو bastourma . أراك هناك في اكسلسيور والمضغ ساندويتش الجبن والبطيخ العصير البارد الحلو (لا اعرف لماذا يتم وضع النظام في اليونانية؟ إينا carpuzi)....

يا للحصول على الاخوة والاخوات في الشمال ، والسكندريين. سان ستيفانو ، وسان جيوفاني ، وندسور ، Athinéos ، الشاطبي ، ويعرف أيضا باسم لعبة selsele نادي ، المطران ، نادي يخوت.... كان المكان المناسب ليكون بعد يوم جيد على الشاطئ ، من "أي حجة أسماء مألوفة ، ستانلي Rouchdy ، العجمي ، Ma'amoura ، المنتزه وسيدي بشر وميامي وGlymonopoulos..... هيا لا تكون خجولة. أراك المصارعة مع اثنين بوصة سميكة شطيرة لحم البقر المشوي (إد : أفضل شطيرة أتذكر هل كانت مباراة الذهاب "" في مطعم بالقرب من الساحل بالقرب من الرملة غاري دي) من إعداد توني سخية جدا ، ويبصقون على مالك Lourantos ، معهود يا لي في يوم واحد. للأسماك ، والساق على القاهرة الحارق ، أي تحد خطير ، فقط اثنان مداخل Pandelis وأندريا لمع المنافس ، وAboukir Zephirion ، القريدس من سانت لوسيا (ماما ميا) ، المكسيك Adour والآن....

كما وضعت طفلا كنت علاقات قوية جدا... التملق للموظفين ودية للغاية.... دعيت لعينة أي شيء في الأفق تكرارها مرات كثيرة على (بما فيها الشوكولاته واليابانية الشهيرة).... أنا كنت من بين المحظوظين في تزايد في "ممر مرض عفن الحضنة الحلو ، Lappas ، توماس ، Koueider ، وتلقائية ، وأمريكا.... والسؤال الملح اليوم ، وبدء حرب أهلية بلا ، الذي كان أفضل الفلافل... الكلام عقلك الآن. ....

كان لدينا أشياء كثيرة مشتركة ، مثل صف آخر بشعبية كبيرة في شرفة دار عرض سينمائي ، واضح جدا ، لا سيما عندما ظهر فيلم وا لا ينطبق لا ينطبق واللعب الى غرفة فارغة. وكان (إد : ذكرياتي الأكثر وضوحا للسينما في الإسكندرية يد أختي على عيني في كل مرة كان هناك لحظة رومانسية ، أو لا سمح الله! قبلة) وبعد معرفة في حين أن الجانبين الحصول على دراية الأول ، بعض من كنت هناك. أترك الغزال رأس بار ، مرسى مطروح ، Gharda'a ، العين السخنة ، بحيرة قارون ، ورحلات الصيد بلطيم والفصول لشخص آخر.... الرجاء في خطوة ، ونحن بحاجة لكم برونتو....
